The vehicle is unlikely to have the connector behind the dash unless it has the factory equipped 7-way on the rear bumper. If it does, the connector that the controller would plug into is clipped to the rear of the small cubbyhole or coin tray in the dash. You'll access the connector by removing the coin tray.

The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 should be pushing 12 volts when on full power or when using the manual override lever. The trailer brakes should be drawing somewhere between 3.2 to 4 amps. From what it sounds like, you are within these parameters, so odds are you are having a ground issue with the trailer. Especially with the front axle locking when power was applied. Usually air bags are used to help level out a load or offer extra support to the OEM suspension system, but it isn't unheard of to use them for smoothing out the ride from the OEM suspension while it's unloaded. I reached out to my contact at Firestone (as I recommend going with their Ride-Tire air bags) and he said that they recently had someone come in and commented how the air bags help his truck ride a bit more smooth on the road without a load so it sounds like it's a very viable solution.
